Xs Sculpture

Shaping the Space and Cognition via Interactive Actuated Scissor Mechanisms

Ken Nakagaki, Skylar Liu, Vasco Xu

About

The Xs Sculpture is a captivating interactive kinetic artwork, featuring a series of actuated scissor mechanisms that enable it to dynamically alter its form. This transformation results in a multitude of shapes and movements, offering varied metaphorical interpretations. It integrates LED lighting to project expansive shadows across walls and ceilings, transforming the space into an immersive installation that challenges our spatial perceptions. This sculpture also responds to user interaction through sensors, allowing participants to shape both the sculpture and the shadows it casts. This paper discusses the sculpture's concept, design, implementation, and its showcase at the Ars Electronica Festival 2023, highlighting the fusion of technology and art to reshape environmental and perceptual experiences.
